06 / 1MAJOR OPEN [07.22.2007]
COMMENT: OMEGA generally follows the principle of 5-Card MAJOR openings and 2-over-1 [UPH] Game Forcing. For lead purposes, a GOOD 4-Card MAJOR will frequently be opened in 3rd/4th position. 1-MAJOR in 1st/2nd position is always "expected" to be 5-Cards or longer. For competitive bidding purposes, OMEGA recommends opening a GOOD 4-Card Heart Suit in 1st/2nd position [Usually will have fewer that 3 Spades]. After opening a 4-Card Heart suit, OMEGA has no agreement that confirms "only 4 Hearts". Partner will always "expect" a 5-Card MAJOR. HOWEVER, After opening 1H, a minimum minor rebid tends to suggest a LONGER minor. With the inclusion of "Flannery", responder is not obligated to respond a 4-Card Spade suit over 1H. Generally a 1S response to 1H will include either 5 Spades -or- a 4-Card suit good enough to welcome a 3-Card raise with A-or-K-or-Q.
- REQUIREMENTS (12-19 HC)
- ONLY 4 H = 12-16 HC; USUALLY Longer minor -OR- 3rd/4th Seat
- ONLY 4 S = 3rd/4th Seat
- 6-7 Trumps = 15-19 HC (See 10 / 2MAJOR Open)
COMMENT: OMEGA does NOT use WEAK 2Bids - ALL 2MAJOR are 11-14 HC. After opening 1MAJOR, a minimum same MAJOR rebid = 6-Card MAJOR and 15-17 HC. The jump rebid in the Same MAJOR promises a 6-Card MAJOR [18-19 HC].
- ONLY 5 Trumps = 12-19 HC
- NOT suitable for Other MAJOR Opening
- 1st RESPONSE (UPH)
- 1S over 1H = 5 S -or- "OK to raise with Hxx"
- 1NT = 5-11 HC; SEMI-Forcing; USUALLY Less than 3-Card SUPPORT
1NT COMMENT: Standard "2-over-1" systems require that 1NT response [UPH] is forcing. This treatment allows responder to introduce a 6-card suit with a weak hand. The "standard" 1NT Forcing is also used to describe a "flawed" 3-card limit raise at the 2nd bid [3-level]. We avoid raising 1MAJOR to the 3-level with ONLY 3 trumps.
- 2C = 10-12 HC -or- Game Forcing; MAY be 3-Card Limit Raise
2C COMMENT: Because we prefer NOT to raise 1MAJOR to the 3-level with ONLY 3 trumps, this artificial 2C response [UPH] will keep the bidding at the 2-level.
- 2D = 10-12 HC -or- Game Forcing
- 2Same MAJOR = 5-10 HC; 3 Trumps
COMMENT: OMEGA has other bids to describe various MAJOR raises which include 4 TRUMPS. Therefore, a single raise [UPH] will ALWAYS be ONLY 3 TRUMPS. This is valuable information in considering game tries - applying the "Law-of-Total-Tricks" [LOTT].
- 2H over 1S = 10-12 HC -or- Game Forcing
- 2S over 1H = Weak Jump Shift; 6 S; 0-5 HC
- 2NT = JACOBY 2NT; Game Forcing; 13+ HC; 4 Trumps
- 3C = LIMIT RAISE; 4 Trumps
- 10-12 HC MAY have SPLINTER -OR-
- 8-9 HC; SPLINTER [DECLINE showing Splinter]
- 3D = CONSTRUCTIVE RAISE; 4 Trumps; 8-9 HC; USUALLY NO SPLINTER
BERGEN COMMENTS: A "Bergen" limit raise [10-12 HC + 4 trumps] will ALWAYS continue to game with a SPLINTER. A "Bergen" constructive raise [8-9 HC + 4 trumps] will ALWAYS be considered a limit raise [3C] when it includes a SPLINTER. The up-graded "Bergen" raise may continue to game ONLY over Opener's "Singleton Inquiry" - but may NOT identify SPLINTER.

COMMENT: ALL 2-over-1 suit responses are treated initially as Game Forcing. A simple rebid of the original 2-over-1 is now ONLY invitational [10-12 HC with 6-Card Suit]. ALL other rebids below game [except 2C -and- minimum Opener's MAJOR] promise EXTRA VALUES [15+ HC]. ALL game rebids indicate less than 15 HC.
