11 / 2NT OPEN [07.21.2007]

COMMENT: OMEGA and several individuals "transpose" the HC requirements for 2NT Open and 2NT rebid after 2C Open. 2NT [22-24 HC] provides more safety when responder is very weak and has no long playable suit. Our 2NT Open may include a 5-Card MAJOR. Our 1st preference is NOT to use "Puppet Stayman" to identify Opener's 5-Card MAJOR. Stayman with SMOLEN is included in this section -and- "Puppet Stayman" as an alternate is described in the following section.

  • REQUIREMENTS
    • 22-24 HC; May be SUPER 21 HC
    • 5-Card MAJOR allowed
  • 1st RESPONSE
    • 3C [Stayman with SMOLEN]
      • ONLY ONE 4-Card MAJOR [NEVER 4-3-3-3] -OR-
      • 5-4 MAJORS -OR-
      • BOTH 4-Card MAJORS with HC for 4NT Slam Invitation

STAYMAN COMMENT: Our version of Stayman [with SMOLEN] provides adequate information for Opener's decision - while minimizing disclosure of Opener's exact holdings. OMEGA [and many others] do NOT use Stayman with 4-3-3-3 pattern. OMEGA does not use Jacoby Transfer [over 2NT Open] with 5-3-3-2 pattern - Stayman is preferred]. Jacoby Transfer [over 2NT Open] and 3NT rebid is NEVER 5-3-3-2 pattern [ALWAYS Singleton or two doubletons, 5-4-2-2]

    • 3D = H Transfer; 5+ H [NOT 5-3-3-2]
    • 3H = S Transfer; 5+ S [NOT 5-3-3-2]
    • 3S Requires 3NT = FINAL -or- (minor Slam Interest)
    • 3NT = BOTH 4-Card MAJORS [< HC for 4NT Slam Invitation]
    • 4C = 14-30; NO Key Suit
    • 4D = H Transfer; 6+ H
    • 4H = S Transfer; 6+ S
    • 4NT = Quantitative; Slam Invitation
  • 3C Stayman with SMOLEN
    • Response to 3C
      • 3D = NO 4-or-5-Card MAJOR
      • 3H = 4-5 H
      • 3S = 4-5 S [With BOTH MAJORS -and- Maximum, may "elect" to respond 3S FIRST]
      • 3NT NOT USED
    • After 3D Response
      • 3H = 4 H + 5 S [SMOLEN]
      • 3S = 5 H + 4 S [SMOLEN]
      • 4D = "Delayed" Transfer to 4H [4 S + 6 H]
      • 4S = "Delayed" Transfer to 4S [6 S + 4 H]
      • 4NT [BOTH 4-Card MAJORS with HC for 4NT Slam Invitation]
    • After 3H Response - 3NT [4-5 S - NOT 4-3-3-3]
      • P [Less than 4 S]
      • 4S [4 S]
    •   After 3S Response – 3NT [4-5 H - NOT 4-3-3-3]
      • P [Less than 4 S]
      • 4H [4 H]; MAXIMUM
  • 3D Sequences = H Transfer – NEVER 5-3-3-2 [Usually equal-or-better 3NT]

JACOBY COMMENT: Because our 2NT Open may include a 5-Card MAJOR, OMEGA provides an option to disclose the 5-Card MAJOR after Jacoby Transfer. If Opener has only 2-Cards in responder's "transfer" MAJOR -AND- 5-Cards in the Other MAJOR, Opener may describe this holding and allow responder to make the final decision. OMEGA application of Jacoby Transfer also allows describing 5-5 MAJORS both Mild -or- Strong.

    • 3H = Standard
      • 3S Rebid = 5-5 MAJORS; MILD
      • 3NT Rebid = Singleton -or- TWO doubletons
      • 4minor Rebid [INCLUDING 4C] = NATURAL 4+ Cards
    • 3S = 5 S and ONLY 2 H
      • 3NT Rebid = FINAL
      • 4D Rebid = H Re-Transfer
      • 4H Rebid = S Transfer
  • 3H Sequences = S Transfer – NEVER 5-3-3-2 [Usually equal-or-better 3NT]
    • 3S = Standard
      • 3NT Rebid = Singleton -or- TWO doubletons
      • 4minor Rebid [INCLUDING 4C] = NATURAL; 4+ Cards
      • 4H Rebid = 5-5 MAJORS – STRONG
    •  3NT = 5 H and ONLY 2 S
      • PASS = FINAL
      • 4D Rebid = H Transfer
      • 4H Rebid = S Re-Transfer
    • Other Sequences after Jacoby Transfer
      • 4NT = Slam Invitation; 5 Trumps
      • 5Same MAJOR = STRONG Slam Invitation; 6-7 Trumps
  • 3S Requires 3NT
    • P = FINAL
    • 4C = 6 C; Slam Interest; Values for Raise to 4NT
    • 4D = 6 D; Slam Interest; Values for Raise to 4NT
    • 4MAJOR (Artificial) = 5/5 minor 2-Suiter; MAJOR SPLINTER
    • 4NT = 5/4 minors -or- 4/5 minors; Values for Raise to 4NT
  • TEXAS TRANSFER SEQUENCES
    • 4D = H Transfer; 6+ H
    • 4S = S Transfer; 6+ S
    • 4NT = 14-30

ACE ASKING: After Stayman, Responder's 4C is ALWAYS Gerber. After Jacoby Transfer, Responder's 4C is ALWAYS Natural. HOWEVER, 4C immediate or 4C rebid after 3NT is ALWAYS Gerber. After Stayman or Jacoby Transfer, Responder's 4NT is ALWAYS Natural. After Texas Transfer, Responder's 4NT is ALWAYS Blackwood [6-Card MAJOR].
